GTV First Loop: Beartooths

Jeff here. The Wyoming road atlas for the Beartooth Plateau showed a sea of white (tundra) dotted with little bits of blue (lakes), with a distinct lack of red lines (roads), so we knew we’d like it here. And so exploring we went, armed with a proper map from Dan.

Our camp at Island Lake was the starting point, temperatures were just above freezing but the sky was clear. The trail rolled a bit but mostly stayed along the west side of Island Lake, leading us to Night Lake.

We passed many unnamed lakes as we headed north.

Becker Lake was next; its western side ringed with giant granite slabs that plunged deep into the water.

From Becker the trail began to climb more steadily, leading us to Albino Lake, where we broke for lunch.

The notch in the ridge ahead was our destination.

Looking back towards Albino.

The top of the pass brought views of Jasper Lake flowing via a series of falls into Golden Lake.

Time to head back down towards Becker…

Flynn is happy to chill in the sun while we filter some water.

Finally, back at Island Lake. All told, just short of fourteen miles.

Back to the GTV for another night at the Snowgrass campground. Must make plans to come back to explore the backcountry!

Days Lesson: Go for a hike.
