GTV First Loop: Guanella Pass

Both of us here. Continuing southward, we stopped in Georgetown for breakfast. The town was cute enough, though not necessarily outstanding, but it gave us the idea to try driving over Guanella Pass. A bit of an adventure, because while the road from Georgetown to the pass itself is paved, the other side is not.

Remember the aforementioned shimmering aspens? Well they made quite an appearance as we ascended.

Eventually the trees gave way to a high alpine meadow.

Mt Bierstadt, one of Colorado’s 14’ers

Our short exploratory walk turned into a bit of a hike (“If we just get around that bend/over that hill/on top of those rocks I bet we’ll get a great view…”)

Over Kenosha and Red Hills Passes…

…and into a funky little place called Cottonwood Hot Springs. To be honest, funky might be a bit of an understatement. But they did have six huge pools full of what the Utes called “magic waters.” After settling into one of the many empty camping spaces they had available, we spent the evening moving from pool to pool, enjoying the slightly varying temperatures and their extensive collection of floaties, which made the whole endeavor gloriously effortless.

Day’s Lessons: It's easy to get "High Plains Drifter" stuck in your head when exploring Colorado. Also, always say ‘yes’ to lying on your back in a pool of hot spring water, weightless, watching shooting stars.
